Absolute power…

Sometimes I wish I hadn’t gotten involved in this election at all.  Not because certain individuals are very clearly attempting to intimidate and bully me (so we’re all clear, it’s not going to work), but because I have seen the ugly side of my city and it honestly hurts my heart.

I come from Washington, D.C. – where corruption is currency.  So, I’m not so naive to think that political corruption, promises and favors wouldn’t slither around Auburn.  I guess I just thought that those who have been in the political game would be, well, better at concealing it.  Maybe they just think they’re above reproach.

But this post on Facebook was rather revealing, showing how brazen some are.

It also reminded me of what Deputy Mayor Wales said at the end of the Rotary Mayoral Ftenororum (49:20): “So, if you want the old Bill Peloza energizer bunny to help you, please consider voting for me.”

Is telling a city employee to “take care of him, he’s a big deal in Auburn” how energizer bunny Bill Peloza will be helping if Deputy Mayor Wales is elected Mayor? I hope not, since it goes against the City Council Rules and Procedures, and puts the city at risk for potential litigation or liability exposure.  And ya know, is pretty unethical.

Your vote really does count

I receieved an email from Councilmember Rich Wagner. He wanted me to share this and I could not agree more!

“[E]very vote is important, especially in a local election.”

That old saying was very well demonstrated during my re-election in 2013, where I won by only 35 votes out of approximately 12,500 total votes cast.
Those numbers mean that if only 18 people had voted differently than they did (just one vote out of every 360) I would have lost. EVERY VOTE IS IMPORTANT!!

________________

So please, if you aren’t certain get out there and talk to the candidates (both are holding events in these final weeks before the election), ask questions, talk to people who’s opinion you trust and respect and reflect on what you want for Auburn.

And once you’ve done that: ensure your friends, family, coworkers and neighbors are voting as well!!

Councilmember Wagner will not be running for re-election this year, after having been a City Council member for 28 consecutive years, the longest in Auburn’s 125 year history.

There are currently 2 individuals campainging for his seat on the Council:

Gotta have Faith

Deputy Mayor Wales has repeatedly claimed that the Faith based community in Auburn want to be involved in the discussion for how to best care for homeless population, as well as be involved in the act of caring for and serving these more vulnerable members of our community.

Being raised in a church-going Family, with a parish that had a soup kitchen and community pantry, I found the assertion that the faith based community wasn’t involved to be suspect. So, I once again reached out to my contacts who serve the homeless community and asked. I received a quick, resounding NO – that the claim is absolutely not true.

First, among the qualified, relevant and concerned members of the Mayor’s Taskforce on Homeless is a Messiah Lutheran Church Program Volunteer.

Further, to give a glimpse of just some of what our Faith Based community in Auburn does for our homeless and low income population, I was provided a list of Churches or religious entities and how they serve. This is by no means everything done, or every religious organization, in Auburn. But it paints a pretty beautiful picture of the compassion that is sewn throughout our city.

Latter Day Saints church (5-7 Wards):
Volunteer weekly
Making mats for the homeless to sleep on
Make blankets for the homeless
Make specialized pillows with “plastic covers” that are comfortable to sleep on
Make hygiene kits every week
Make meals as requested
Volunteer for large projects – like painting and spring cleaning

Zion Lutheran:
Meal every week for homeless

Grace:
On call support

NW Family Church:
Provide support and work with organizations to help prevent persons from becoming homeless
Any emergency needs

First United Methodist:
Meal every week for homeless
Counseling support
On call support for Auburn Food Bank

Messiah Lutheran:
Meal every week for homeless
Small food bank 1 day a week to supplement the day Auburn Food Bank is closed
On call support for Auburn Food Bank

New Day:
Volunteer
Food drives
Sock drives
Winter coat drives
Misc needs drives
Make mats for the homeless

Holy Family:
On call support for Auburn Food Bank

Lifeway Church:
Meal every week
Counseling support

Community of Christ:
Meals
Food drives

Buddhist Temple:
Meals – frozen to help at shelter
Food drives
Fill special needs for Auburn Food Bank

Faith Family Church(brand new church in Lakeland):
Already bringing in food, towels, flip flops, etc. to the Auburn Food Bank

*St Matthews Episcopal Church:
Helps host the Thursday Night Community Supper

Additionally, several Spanish churches that use these church sites – help with food service.

So, as you can see – it’s a bit confusing to see why one might allege the faith based community are being cut out of homeless and community outreach.

Real Talk

If you haven’t noticed, I’ve been quiet lately.  Doesn’t mean that I haven’t stopped researching, asking questions or staying involved.  I promise you – I have.  And that’s what has brought me to a very difficult, ethical, dilema.

Through all of my research there have been times when frustration was the only thing my research was providing me, and not because of lack of answers.  I have discovered things that I felt would be unethical to share.  Or that would be clearly biased.   But, I know them.  And that has been one of the hardest things all along.

And during that time, 709ac483c002644af0e924e3010dd910--libra-morals.jpgI knew my decision may have leaned more one way than another, but I was constantly chasing truth and reasons to feel good about voting for both candidate, or being comfortable should either win.  I, however, no longer have that stance and that is where the dilemia comes in.  I was conflicted that there would be concern that my personal decision to fully and actively support one candidate over the other would cloud the facts presented on this site, and the thorough research I have done.

After discussing it with several people (who don’t live in Auburn, and who’s ethical and moral judgement I trust steadfastly) I believe that I can remain unbiased in the sharing of information related to this election.   I have an amazing ability to compartmentalize, but more importantly: facts are truth, and truth is not biased.  Also, I document where my information comes from.

There are many reasons that I have come to a firm conclusion to support one candidate over another, and to do so actively.  Should one want to know those reasons they can email me privately.  I will not express them here as that is absolutely not what this site is about.

Keep an eye out for updates coming soon.

PDC Updates

I’ve updated the PDC page, adding information on the complaint against Nancy Backus. I also have added a page talking about donation, and have posted my findings of the out-of-Auburn donors. Though I emailed both camaigns for information on their out-of-Auburn donors, I have not received back information from the Wales campaign. I posted what I was able to find through my independent research.

Well this is awkward…

In doing my usual checks of the PDC for both candidates I came across a new complaint for candidate Nancy Backus, filed August 31, 2017.  The complaint was created by the PDC September 6, 2017.

Backus, Nancy – Alleged Violation of RCW 42.17A.555 for the unauthorized use of public facilities and resources to support a political campaign. (EY 2017, AUG 2017)

I knew, from my coffee with Largo Wales, that she had intended on filing a PDC complaint regarding Backus’ campaign manager and what she believed to be Dana Hinman’s used of city time and resources for campaigning (I addressed this last week – I couldn’t find anything). I was a little surprised to see that someone other than Wales had filed the PDC complaint, but maybe they did it on their own.

Have to say, I was even more surprised when this site (yeah, the one you’re reading right now) was used as evidence to support one of the allegations in the complaint.

PDCAwkward.jpg

The addition of this site as supporting evidence makes even less sense as it is meant to support this allegation: “Alleged complaint #2: Candidate Backus’ campaign chairperson is a city employee that is using city equipment to respond to campaign FaceBook messages as recently as the week of 8/28/17. See attached file under car tab fees.

For the record, the page referenced isn’t attached, they attached the blog posts (up to 9/1).  And the car tab fees page has nothing on it regarding messages. I’ll address that when update the PDC page.  I have been in contact with the PDC regarding this, and should they need anything further I will provide it without hesitation.

I have a long list of things I have to write, and to update.  I guess the list just got longer!
